Springfield, VA – In 1997, Foundation provided staff attorneys entered into a settlement agreement for California teachers with the California Teachers Association (CTA). The agreement protects teachers’ rights under Foundation-established Supreme Court precedents.
For the past 20 years, thousands of teachers have saved hundreds of dollars and protected their free speech by legally exercising their right to resign from union membership each year, as was agreed to in the 1997 Foundation forced settlement and recognized in previous Foundation-won Supreme Court precedent, and as nonmembers forced to still pay money to the union as a condition of employment object to the political, ideological, and other nonbargaining expenditures, thereby saving more than $300.00 annually.
The deadline each year for existing nonmembers to opt-out of the nonbargaining expenses and save hundreds of dollars is November 15th.
The process to properly object and ensure a prompt delivery of a rebate check for nonbargaining expenditures from union officials can be found here.
If you have any questions or problems with either the union or the school district, you may call the Foundation toll free at 1-800-336-3600, or e-mail the Foundation’s Legal Department, for free help.
