Poll: Union Members Overwhelmingly Oppose Union Boss Political Spending on 2010 Midterm Elections

Despite DC union officials’ agenda, union membership think stimulus plan and healthcare bills were failures, and oppose keeping Pelosi as Speaker

Washington, DC (November 1, 2010) – A nationwide poll of 760 union members from both the private and government sector conducted last week demonstrates a staggering disconnect between union members and the national union officials who claim to represent them. The scientific survey was conducted October 26-28 by long time pollster Frank Luntz.

The poll asked various questions regarding their union leadership and the 2010 midterm elections. The poll found that 60 percent of union members oppose their union bosses’ political spending in the 2010 midterm elections, viewing it a wasteful use of union dues and treasuries to protect incumbent Democrat politicians in Washington, D.C.

Despite Big Labor’s 2010 political spending blitz – led by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) union bosses’ $87.5 million “incumbent protection program” – nearly 60 percent believe that a mostly even balance of power between Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill is best for America and the same number would rather that money be spent working with employers to create new and better jobs. A majority of union members even believe that union boss political spending should be used to “throw the bums out” instead, and half support replacing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with someone else while only 30 percent want her to remain Speaker.

In light of Big Labor’s 2010 political spending spree, 59 percent of union membership would actually vote to replace their own “union leadership” if given a secret ballot election to do so.

Half of union members view President Obama and the Democrat Congress’s healthcare reform bill as a failure, while only 37 percent view it as a success. Majorities also view the 2009 stimulus bill and the 2008 corporate bailouts as failures. Overwhelming majorities oppose future government spending and debt to rejuvenate the economy; and two-thirds of union members instead trust entrepreneurs, small businesses, and employers to lead America to better job growth.

In regards to their own union representation, a plurality of union members disapprove of the job America’s “labor leaders” are doing and view their union hierarchies as less honest and principled than 50 years ago. A whopping 72 percent of union members think union bosses should be held more accountable to workers and 63 percent think union officials are overpaid. Sixty-six percent think union officers mostly look out for themselves instead of “the little guy.”

Eighty percent supported the Right to Work principle that union membership and dues payment should be voluntary and not required as a condition of employment. Nearly 90 percent of union employees surveyed favored more union hierarchy disclosure and accountability.

“As top union officials are pouring an estimated one billion dollars into re-electing Democrats into Congress, a large majority of union members actually oppose the union bosses’ political agenda” said Mark Mix, President of the National Right to Work Foundation. “That’s why it comes to no surprise that union members would like to replace their own union leadership, and overwhelmingly support the Right to Work principle for all of America’s workers.”

right to work law

It is urgent that whatever regulation, executive order, or any other measure that was imposed to change the meaning of the Hatch Act which was written into law for the sole purpose of keeping Unions from becoming a part of the federal government. I and many of my family were good representatives of the federal system and retired from this service. You were unable to create a union in the federal system because among other reasons, it was necessary that people working for the govcernment must be apolitical because of the change in administrations. Reimpose the reason the Hatch Act was meant to do.

The beginning of the end for public unions?

I can think of one thing to thank Mr. Obama for, that being giving America it's Tora Tora Tora wake-up call! Slumbering giant is now awake rubbing his eyes looking around and wondering how the heck did we get here? Crippling national debt which BTW both parties helped with but it really went into high gear with Obama, states and cities run by progressive/liberal economic policies are going bankrupt!

Enter the tea party revolution, in this great awakening Americans are rediscovering our founding principles regarding our rights based in natural law and the forgotten economics of Adam Smith's (The Wealth of Nations) which took this country from being basically third world after the revolution to one of the greatest nations on earth bringing economic prosperity to the most people and giving them the most individual freedom and liberty of any other nation up until 100 years ago, that's when the progressive movement started and now we find ourselves here, despised throughout the world even after we've forked out billions to them, we're broke but still go crazy spending on the Chinese credit card.

A counter revolution has just begun with the goal of restoring our Constitutional Republic and the limited government it was originally set up to be, $14 trillion and growing of debt in the pinheads in Washington squabble over a few billion worth of real spending cuts? As far as the unions are concerned I think it's like the global warming scam, people have caught on to the truth and want the nonsense to end. I pray we are seeing the beginnings of a lot of endings, it's time to hit the reset button to restore the default settings.

Unions

Focus On The Family about 10 years ago aired the testimony of a man whose grandfather brought the Mafia into the USA. That man was working his way up through the ranks of the Mafia to take his grandfather's place when he was stopped by the sovereign intervention of God. Today he has an outstanding prison ministry. During the course of his 2-hour testimony on the radio, he distinctly said that every union in the USA is controlled by the Mafia. In-house unions are an exception, however. The first name of that man is Tom, but I don't know how to spell his last name, which began with a P.

During the 1970's I met people, who told me how Mafia goons beat people up at the polls during the 1930's in PA if they tried to vote Republican. To avoid the beatings, Republican voters waited for the miners to get out of work in the mines so they could vote. There were many brawls throughout PA with the Mafia, union thugs and the miners always won. In those days with paper ballots, elections couldn't be rigged using the modems on the voting machines.

A British historian named Douglas Reed wrote a book called "Far And Wide" awhile before the Korean War ended. He predicted that war would not be won by the USA for the reasons explained in his book. One of those reasons is that the top ranks of the Mafia are connected to the top ranks of the Communist Party. Both he and his publisher were assassinated shortly after his book was released to the public in England. Whoever murdered them also stole every unsold copy of that book in the publisher's warehouse. I had the privilege of seeing during the 1980's a copy that survived.

Thus, you are not dealing with amateur thugs. They are cold-blooded traitors.

Communism is embedded bigger that ever

You said what I was going to say. Red China is now taking over and do you suppose that they will support unions in their own country like they and the Soviet Union was all over the world? Two of my '60's liberal friends have now admitted to me that there were actually communist party members back then and attended meetings in South Bend, Indiana which is another industrial city that was yet another failed union town.

Things are now ready for their attempted takeover !
Look at all of the Americans that are investing in gold, guns
and food supplies.

That's not just the best answer. It's the betsest answer!

forced union and dues

I am a retired Teamster member and I don't like the forced plan by the unions. If someone wants to join a union that's fine. That's by choice whice is the American way. You don't force everyone to join a union nor DO YOU do away with secret ballots. That's our American RIGHT ti vote on a secret ballot. When you do away with the secret ballot you into DICTATORSHIP. That's my 2 cents worth .

Your 2 cents worth by R.C.Norwood

I agree with Robert, - Compulsory extraction of Union Dues or "Closed Shop" in NOT Freedom but is Pure LaborUnion Exhortion of Payment for the Right to Work.. Robert's 2 cent position is what stands between TheFree Right to Work Freedoms & the $Multi-Million Dollars of forced UnionDues to buy off co-colluding Democrat Law Makers..

We the People will be properly governed by our voter's Elected Representatives or we will forcefully Ruled by & OverRuled by Socialist Tyrants & Bossy LaborUnion Thugs..

If the Goose will not lay us more Golden EGGs then we'll Kill the goose and eat the Meat.. Closed-Shop-Labor-Union Motto...!!!

Just remember the OnceGreatCarCompany - American Motors Jeeps of Kenosha,Wisc. The Labor Union Killed this good car company, and they will kill your company also..

AFSCME stealing our union dues to keep Dems in office

As a begrudging AFSCME member I am mad as hell that these union bullies keep taking our union dues and use them against our will to keep LIBERALS in office! If there is a surplus, then damnit give it back to the members! I am a strict CONSERVATIVE and I don't want one penny going to the Democratic party! I am not alone. Many are fed up with this mobster mentality from our union and even though there is a form one can fill out to prevent these funds from going to these causes (supposedly) they make it so difficult and time and money consuming to get it done (of course) a lot of people just give up. Not me...it's the principal and I and others will continue to fight!!!

Federal Workers Have Right to Work

As a federal employee and a union member, I want to clarify some things. Federal workers already have "Right to Work". No one can force a federal worker to join a union. That is the way that it is by law right now and I think that is the way it should be. Union membership is voluntary. We have secret ballots and that is the way it should be. It is illegal for a union to take union dues and use them to contribute to any political campaign. Our union has a separate Political Action Committee (PAC) which members are free to donate to or not. There is no comingling of funds. If the union does take dues and uses them for political contributions, those responsible can go to jail. Finally, my union is more about protecting the workers from management abuse and ensuring the safety of both the workers and the public (my job deals with ensuring the safety of the flying public). The contract that we are currently under was coerced by the Agency. They stopped negotiating in good faith. We were told that if we didn't vote for the contract they proposed, we would be at impass and it would go to congress. We would then be forced to take the last offer by management. That isn't good faith bargaining, that is bullying. Unions are both good and bad. Without them, workers are forced to work in unsafe conditions, with 12 hour days without breaks for 6 days a week and children forced to work. All these things...breaks...lunch...bathroom breaks...safety equipment...child labor laws...all of these things are the result of unions. Do unions sometimes do things wrong? Of course! But they are an essential counterbalance in a well functioning capitalist system. I'm absolutely in favor of the right to work, and we have that. I am absolutely in favor of secret ballots, and we have that. I am absolutely opposed to union dues being used for political activity, and we have laws against that. Rather than decry federal worker unions, it sure sounds like what you really want is for all unions to follow the same rules that apply to federal workers...unless you are just anti-union and anti-worker altogether. If you are just "anti-union" and anti-worker, then think about it the next time you are at work and have to use the bathroom, or are on your 15 minute break, or eating your lunch, or see a fire extinguisher or safety exit door. Even with these safety rules, 14 workers a day die on the job. By the way, the 8 hour day with breaks has been demonstrated to make workers more productive than a straight 12 hour day. If you run a horse straight out without a break, you will kill it. The same is true of a man. If you stop and take a break, you get more work out of both horses and men. It isn't sloth, it's efficiency. By the way, what is wrong with workers getting paid well? CEOs get paid hundreds of times what a worker gets paid. Why is letting the market determine cost ok for everything else except the cost of labor? Unions...collective bargaining...just sets the fair market value of the commodity of labor. Isn't that how capitalism works? If workers with a skillset get together and decide that they don't want to work for a low income, why is that philosophically wrong? Isn't that capitalism? Isn't that what we all say we believe in? Why let government force workers to work cheaper? Why not let the market decide what is the fair price for skilled labor?

Unions and or Right to work

Just a litle food for thought. In 1965 an Impala Super Sport, loaded, cost $ 3,100.00 out the door. I was a young man in the Air Force at that time with a very low income. Wadges for Union & Non-union workers were not all that high either. I bought Two brand new Impala's that year. TODAY, a young man in the Air Force makes more than Five time what I made in 1965.

Your union workers make many thousands more than that GI. Even the Non-union worker makes far more than that GI. But I'm willing to bet you can't get a fully loaded Chev. for less than $ 38,000.00 plus tax & Lic.

I just looked at our local paper and saw that the Chev. dealer is giving a "Discount" of $6,500.00 off the sticker price to Military members. Please tell me how this could happen - OH I know why. EVERY Union Boss and Member has demanded higher wadges each and every year for the past 45 years that I know of!!!

Still wonder why the prices of Everything keeps going up. Simple when you look at what the "Union's & Labor's" have demanded...

And now we have people in the streets saying that it's the banks fault. When our Government puts a stop to the demands of the Unions, then and only then will things start to calm down.

As I said, just Food For Thought.

union representation

I am in accord with the gentleman who opposes automatic sign up without secret ballot. the time is to rebuke national union leaders who are only interested in political power to gain fraudulent appointments by denying the secret ballot. National unions are essentially a disgrace and should not be allowed to establish policy. Policy and union people are only to be made by secret ballot with no choice by national officers. Let good local union members decide who is to represent them via ballot not bigotry.

once union not anymore.

I Agree with you and Money from the Union's should be 100 Percent Accountable and not used for Political Reasons. They argue that they have a right to use it as they see fit- But that is Nobody can agree on which side it should be used for.As some have written. I state that every Penny should be accountable and not used for Union Party's or Conventions or any thing other then to help member's. I once tried for A hardship being hurt and out of Work. They offer $10.00 Dollars and I had to repay it on the next Payday.I was having much more then that taken out twice a month as union members know. Unions have HELPED congress Destory the JOBS and Markets by Demanding way more then employer's can afford. I loved pay increase's as much as anybody. But if they are going to Destory America then I will have to make it on what I have. Its better then having my JOB Out Sourced to Mexico...Now we have no Jobs.

union boss

I would love to be the union boss I would stop this NOW and stick up for you but I will never fever either party it's your money not his to do what he wants and I can bet he has use your money to do his personable things I know he is doing that when I see that guy it makes me sick I feel sorry for you guys it sucks that someone would do that to any of the members fire him karma will get him

rebirth of Capone days

These union bosses want to boycott businesses that dont support them I dont either. That is something in line of the way Capone would control businesses in his days.(Happy Syphilis) The unions are crooks who want to support the Democrat crooks in government office today. Its time to standup to these bullies.
