{"id":2304,"date":"2006-06-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2006-06-23T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2016-08-09T18:25:16","modified_gmt":"2016-08-09T18:25:16","slug":"union-tactics-don-t-give-workers-a-choice-detroit-news-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nrtw.org\/es\/news\/union-tactics-don-t-give-workers-a-choice-detroit-news-0\/","title":{"rendered":"Union tactics don&#8217;t give workers a choice (Detroit News)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>*This letter to the editor originally appeared in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.detnews.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20060623\/OPINION01\/606230308\/1008\">Detroit News<\/a>.*<\/p>\n<p>Dear Editor,<\/p>\n<p>In a recent self-congratulatory piece, Teamsters chief James Hoffa proclaimed \u00abUnions practice democracy,\u00bb yet he and other union officials strongly oppose workers exercising individual free choice (\u00abSpreading democracy empowers unions,\u00bb June 9).<\/p>\n<p>Not only do Hoffa and the Teamsters hierarchy detest right-to-work laws, which make union membership and dues payment strictly voluntary, but they also impose union affiliation on workers in states where right-to-work protections exist.<\/p>\n<p>This week in Las Vegas, Teamsters officials will hold a training rally called \u00abOrganizing to Dominate Industries.\u00bb The goal is to train union organizers in more \u00abin your face\u00bb organizing tactics that further undermine employee free choice.<\/p>\n<p>Chief among these are \u00abcard check\u00bb drives, under which union officials strong-arm employers into handing over employees&#8217; personal information, and workers are subjected to menacing home visits until they sign cards that count as \u00abvotes\u00bb in support of unionization. A call to arms in a flier touting the training event urges: \u00abThe time has come to deploy our army to achieve Teamster dominance.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>With such militancy, it&#8217;s no wonder that droves of workers have mounted legal challenges to these abusive organizing drives with help from the National Right to Work Foundation, as union organizers have targeted many workers with bribery, stalking, and threats during them.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than give us his happy talk about union democracy, Hoffa could start by ensuring that workers are given a free choice when deciding whether to join.
